The top athletic stars will come to Toruń in February to take part in the ORLEN Copernicus Cup 2020 meeting. The event in the Toruń Arena is a part of the World Athletics Indoor Tour series and will take place on February 8 at 18.00.
Today's press conference was attended by the host of the city of Toruń, president Michał Zaleski, athlete Iga Baumgart-Witan, vice president of Arena Toruń Andrzej Pietrowski and meeting director and president of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Athletic Association Krzysztof Wolsztyński.
- The line-up is very strong. It's going to be a really fast and dynamic meeting and should last three-hour. There will be athletes who haven't participated in Poland yet. Even in the pole vault, the line-up is extremely strong, but not only in the pole vault, because big names will also appear even in 400 and 800 meters or in the long jump. - says Krzysztof Wolsztyński.
In Toruń we will see for example the long jumper Ivana Spanovic or the pole vaulter Armand Duplantis. As well, all top polish athletes will participate in the Orlen Copernicus Cup. - We intentionally planned that the last competition is the 800m men, where the line-up is really strong. Adam Kszczot has only the sixth result taking into account last year's results. - adds Wolsztyński.
- I love to compete in Toruń and not only because I won here two times. Every year the line-up is stronger, so it's more difficult to win. The crowd on the stands is so great, they make the astonishing athmosphere and give more power to the athletes. - says Iga Baumgart-Witan, the vice-champion of the world in the 4x400m relay. On the 400m start will face among others Justyna Święty-Ersetic, Lisanne de Witte or the meeting record holder Lea Sprunger.
The icing on the cake should be the men's pole vault competition, where will face the best vaulters of the world like Armand Duplantis, Piotr Lisek, Paweł Wojciechowski or Konstantinos Filippidis. The fans will also see an interesting competition at men's shot put with the polish clash - Michał Haratyk vs Konrad Bukowiecki.
- We're hosting this meeting for the sixth time. It's something that we should be proud of. Orlen Copernicus Cup is one of the best indoor meetings in the whole Europe. - announces Michał Zaleski, the president of the city of Toruń. There is still a small amount of tickets on sale, the prices starts from 10 PLN.
The athletes will compete in 11 events - 8 track and 3 field. The Orlen Copernicus Cup will be the fourth in the World Athletics Indoor Tour 2020. The series of seven meetings start on January 25 in Boston and end on February 21 in Madrid.
- We're proud that the Copernicus Cup was born in our hall and for now is one of the best meetings in the Europe. It makes that we have to focus on preparing Arena Toruń on the highest level. It's big responsibility. I assure that we'll do everything to make every athlete have good memories from Toruń and want to come back in 2021. - says Andrzej Pietrowski.
In 2021 Toruń will host the European Athletics Indoor Championships.- The European Athletics delegation will come to Toruń in February to check our work. Thanks to the good organisation of the Orlen Copernicus Cup, we can organise the championship event. - adds Wolsztyński.
